Making an Arch

Learn how to make a arch and what to do with it

Arches

Hi. To make an arc simply Click the block tool (shift + b), and press arch in the objects menu (as seen on picture 2).

To make a arch you can walk through:

Make a block. Make it 256x256x128 and press enter. This will bring up a menu. Enter these settings:

Wall width: 32 Number of sides: 16 Arc: 180 Start angle: 0 Add height: 0
Press enter. And there you have it. An arch. You might want to rotate it, and if you want to make a complete round arch, make it half the height.

To make a part of a wall select arch and click the Vertex tool (shift + V). And select each little bit of the outer part of the arch, and make it into a sqaure. As seen on picture 3. Now you have a perfect arch walkway.

You can also make a spiral stair with an arch. Make an arch but instead of the other settings write this:

Wall width: 32 Number of sides: 16 Arc: 180 Start angle: 0 Add height: 16
That will make each bit of the arch 16 pixels higher than the one behind it.

Play around with it, untill you find the settings you like the most. To make a complete circle you just type 360 in the Arc.

Pros: this method does work for creating an arch, the tutorial is clear and the writing is simple and to the point. the spiral staircase is informative and useful. the inclusion of the settings is a nice addition to allow easier useage of the tutorial. Cons: i dont think this is the best way to make an arched walkway, there are much simpler ways of doing it that will result in faster compile times as well. Improvements: i think as far as making an arched doorway, you should first create a block shaped brush that is the size you want for the doorway. next make a cylinder brush to use as a guide. place the cylinder brush overlapping in one of the hammer views with the block, and use shift+x to cut the block into the shape of the cylinder. after the block is cut properly delete the guide cylinder and usually you should group or tie the archway to func_detai to useup less resources. Notes: this method you have here works, but for simplicitys sake and not having to using the vertex manipulation tool i think there are better, easier, ways of doing this. if this method works best for you then great use it, but i think its important to include that there are other methods of doing this. btw, my alternative method explanation is pretty bad i know.

Posted by .Krusty I don't think that for the object on your screenshots, an arch is the right way to do. I'd get a cylinder and correctly carve it.
Arch is the right way to do it. Carving is bad :)

Yup it's bad, but not as long as you know what you are doing. I think your way can cause more problems and takes longer to compile. Also it takes much longer to edit it with the vertex tool... But anyways, both is right.
