Photoshop is a very versatile program that provides a lot of control over graphics, both in terms of creation and alteration. If you're used to nothing but Paint, downloading a trial version of Adobe Photoshop CS3 at Adobe would be a good idea. It will help you get a feel for the interface and the tools. It would probably be a good idea to look up some tutorials for beginners that will help you get around the program.

    1. Beginner's Guide to Adobe Photoshop
    2. Tutorials for Photoshop Beginners
    3. Photoshop Tips and Tricks for Beginners
There are many more that you can probably find - all it takes is a little searching on Google.
    • For texturing, you can find tutorials and download texture packs that you can apply to your images. It's not exactly simple if you don't know what you're doing, but you eventually get the hang of things and they get rolling along pretty well.
    • The tools are excellent and downlowdable textures/brushes bring versatility.
    • It's not easy to use, but it's easy to learn to use.
    • Unfortunately, it's $649 for Photoshop CS3, the latest edition.
    • It's very stable
    • GIMP is free. I don't know whether it's any good because I've never used it, but some people swear by it.
Good luck. I hope this helped.

Just as a by the way, mentioning them isn't allowed.

No warez talk of any kind. That includes requests for CD keys, discussing illegal downloads of software, music, movies, passwords for websites, and pretty much anything that could get FPSB into trouble. When in doubt about this rule, ask a moderator or don't post. If it might be illegal, test the limits of the law somewhere else - not FPSB.

Edit: CS3 is Creative suite 3, that has more than photo edits.

I do believe the older versions of photoshop are around 100$

Photoshop Elements 5 costs like 100$, almost as good as the "real deal", but way less expensive as the full version is meant for professionals like photographers or game artists etc
