Models do not goto vtf. Vtf is just for textures, not geometry. To make models and animate them you need a 3D editing program such as, 3ds max, maya, blender etc. Once you have that you make (or import) your model.

In order to make animations you need to then add a skin modifier to your model with the skeleton (rig) you wish to animate. You create your animations in 3ds max (or whatever you are using). Then you need to compile the model and the animations so that they can be used in source.

To just change the skin (the skin is NOT the model, the skin is just the texture - thanks to GB for confusing everyone on this point!!) then you can extract the vtf from the game, export to tga format using VTFEdit and then make the changes you want in photoshop or GIMP

If you end up using 3ds max then I suggest you get the WallWormModelTools:

as it make everything much easier.

The skin is both, the model is the model, the texture is the texture, no need to name the texture the skin.

No! You don't want to open a TGA file with Gimp, stop saying that, seriously, there's a perfectly fine VTF plug-in that won't fuck up the RGB channels.

In order to make animations you need to then add a skin modifier to your model with the skeleton (rig) you wish to animate.

In blender it's just parenting to the armature.

Also, EF is exemplary feedback, and it wasn't shihan who was asking this in the first place.

Y U NO GET EF?! What the fuck does that mean? Epic Fail? I seriously hope not, maybe IT?

Your first post is an illiterate mess and almost impossible to understand. However you asked about how to models and animation and getting them into source, which is what I told you how to do.

If you're not happy then I suggest you either try to figure out what the fuck you want to do before asking the question, or learn to ask the question is a way that is understandable. Either way, dont be rude to people who are trying to help you...

I meant why dont you get an EF for your comment. Yeesh man, just trying to be nice thats all, dont have to call me illiterate was just trying to be nice. I see that failed exponentially beyond anything.

Sry, ive been up all night... for me EF is epic fail, seemed kinda insulting, my bad.

Devious, my point is that in Source language, textures that appear on models are called skins, and it make sense, skin means whats on the outside. I have seen alot of people confused already by the term "Skins" which (I agree) generally used to talk about any model editing. The termanology is very misleading and I think its bad practice to call model edits Skins, because they are not skins, they are models.
