A problem with Hammer. Please help!

By minekip 12 months ago

Hi everyone! My Hammer works so strange. And not only mine, my friend's Hammer behaves the same. When I make my map, it's ok, I can do anything I need... But somehow, when I make the map further, Hammer breaks. I'll explain: 1) I have a map, spawns, some traps. 2) I've inserted spies somewhere. It works great. 3) I've made 2 cylindric func_rotating. Map compiles, but when I launch it ingame, I have the previous version of the map without these cylindres. I can do nothing. 4) I'm restarting Hammer and it says "For your information, XX solid(s) were not loaded due to errors in the file. Would you like to resave your map without these solids?". Great. If I press "No", if won't load the map. If I press "Yes", it will. BUT the map won't have any point entities and all the brush entities will have an empty classname! I need to restore almost the whole map! AND removed brushes are not only rotating cylindres, but spies that were working earlier too! AAAAaaa help!

Thanks. I'll check it out. Why fast? Can this make a map run worse? I mean performance...

EDIT: No, this haven't helped me at all. My map still crashes sometimes.

Yes, it would run worse. A full compile is preferable for a final release, fast is only for quick testing.

You could try renaming the .vmx file to .vmf and opening that. It will be located next to your vmf file. If you've got autosaved files you can fall back onto it'll save you some time at least in re-building your map.

There was an error in the BSP portion of your compile, that is why when you loaded the map in-game it was only playing the last successful compiled version of it. If absolutely necessary you could decompile that bsp but it will need to be cleaned up afterwords as decompiled maps are terrible. If you could upload the contents of your compile log (txt file next to vmf) to pastebin maybe I can determine what exactly caused the bsp to fail in the first place.

By any chance were you using the Carve tool? Importing a high number of small/complex brush-based prefabs? And what exactly do you mean by Spies?

Oh, sorry, I mean spikes :) Anyway, I was trying to use small brushes with a big face number. When I reduced their quality, the map stooped to break. Thank you guys :)
