fy_abandoned (beta 1.0)

abandoned factory/junkyard in Soviet Russia

Description

This is my third map I created for Counter-Strike: Source. I actually started making this map on the 13th of March in 2011, however, I dicided to finish it for the "Junkyard" contest. I have made many visual changes so it would fit the requirements for the contest. It is an abandoned Soviet factory building somewhere in the wastelands of Russia with an additional Junkyard surrounding the compound. Mostly old rusty cars end up here except for a few bigger trucks. Many years the place has been left to the nature to take it back, but now police and special forces are supposed to fight terrorism in an undisturbed place, being on their own.

Gameplay

Equip your sniper rifles, you might want to use them. However, you can eventually get in close combat inside the factory with its many concrete blocks, or try to find a way around to attack the opposing force from behind. There are only few possibilties to hide in the outside place, you have to hurry.

Performance

Note that this map has NOT been optimized yet! It is still in beta, but for now I am going for another project. I will update the map however some time.

Installation

Extract the bsp-file from the zip folder into the directory

Feedback

Any feedback will be appreciated! Tell me what you think of the Soviet style of the map and if it is a good idea to make the map that wide and open. What should I have done better in your opinion? I would love to know!

First of all, thank you very much for your feedback!

The only problem I can see with the outside area i.e. skybox area, is the giant hill with the tires. I would have to say that the white metal texture is a really bad choice. I personally would of chosen a trash texture or a rubble based texture to help blend the tires and the background.

I agree, I am still quite unsatisfied with that hill, but actually it is supposed to be a huge tarp covering some rubble or something like that with the tires keeping it at its place. But yes, I think I have to change something about that.

Although, the main area seems a little to repetitive. The reason I say this is because it sorta takes away from the map. I know it provides space filler, but it would of been nice to seems some more varied props within the cluster of barricades.

I see your point, and in the next version I might add more variety to that place, i.e. props, rubble, debris etc. The idea of the many concrete blocks came up when I found a picture:

But thank you for your advice, I will keep it in mind in case of an update!

    Perfectionist.

    Apologies for the many ratings...

But as far as I can see the map is trying to create a theme that involves a more desolate junkyard. By far the map exceeds that expectation by introducing a very varied environment outside of the gameplay area. The skybox for the most part is really fantastic. It shows that the gameplay area is connected to it's own world and varid props help bring that realism to life. The only problem I can see with the outside area i.e. skybox area, is the giant hill with the tires. I would have to say that the white metal texture is a really bad choice. I personally would of chosen a trash texture or a rubble based texture to help blend the tires and the background. For the gameplay area, for the most part it's an interesting take overall. I really do like the big door area. It has more of a realistic take on a building compared to other maps. Glass windows followed by metal pillars to help realize the true potential and neglect of the building. Although, the main area seems a little to repetitive. The reason I say this is because it sorta takes away from the map. I know it provides space filler, but it would of been nice to seems some more varied props within the cluster of barricades. But for one, I do respect the detail in your displacements. Each curve looks like it's been thought out. Giving the player a reason to travel on lower or high ground. In all, I really do like the map as from what I can see. The map does lack somethings but for the most part, provides an interesting feeling within the world.
