The background's black because the whole picture's En Memoriam. The character was just killed off.
I toyed with using different WWII photos as backgrounds, but it's impossible to find any decent WWII action shots for 2048x2048 that aren't completely blurry.
Also, they made the whole piece too busy, and threw off the composition.
Notes: it looks hot, but the black backgount looks to simple. it is an superb background but not perfect.
